The Salem Area Mass Transit District -- better known as the Cherriots is as clean and well-maintained as any fleet in the country. The quality of vehicle maintenance translates directly to service reliability and a high level of customer satisfaction. Cherriots is now in the process of converting to an all-CNG (compressed natural gas) fueled bus system. CNG fuel is cleaner, more environmentally-friendly, and less subject to price fluctuation and supply constraints.
The first shipment of 10 CNG's arrived in 1998. As of April, 2003, we have received 12 new CNG buses, and will be receiving 12 more over the next few months. These will replaces some of our older, diesel fueled buses.
All future bus orders will be CNG-powered, until we have converted our entire 70-bus fleet to the cleaner-burning fuel. Courthouse Square The District's offstreet transit mall and customer service facilities are located in the heart of the downtown area, at 220 High St. NE, between Chemeketa and Court Sts. Up to 22 buses can meet at the mall, with covered pedestrian walkways connecting all buses to the Cherriots' comfortable waiting room and customer service counter.
